How fortunate we are to be born normal. Yet there are thousands of others specially children in need of greater care, who are abnormal either mentally or physically. Abnormality at birth or at an early age bring misery not only to such a person but also to the parents. Their chances of growing into a normal productive adult are slim. More than anything else, they need Love & Care. But not for Institutions like Camilla, the handicapped will have no where to look for their survival.

Would you help such a deserving person?

Through Camilla a model Institution for rehabilitation of mentally and physically retearted children, you could bring sunshine to these unfortunate children. To find out how, read on.

Camilla – The Pride of Sri Lankan Lions

Camilla School is the biggest and the most meaningful, continuous project of the Lions District 306 A. Camilla School for the Rahabilitation of Mentally and Physically Retarded Children was started in the year 1981. In the year 1983, it received a handsome grant of Rs. 3,000,000 from the Lions of District 106, Denmark.
The Lions of Sri Lanka purchased 3 ½ acres of land and the buildings were, constructed to house 50 retarded children. The buildings include living dormitories for children and the staff, office rooms, dining area, a kitchen and also a well-equipped gymnasium.
It is managed by a lagally constituted Trust. District Governor 306 A is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Past Council Chairman Lion Cassian M. Fernando, who is a Founder Trustee, is the Secretary to the Trust.
The Trust requires approximately Rs. 200,000/- per month or Rs. 2,400,000/- per year to run the School. It receives no assistance from the Government and the School is run exclusively on donations received from Lions, well wishers and parents.

Terra de Homes of Netherlands provides financial assistance annually to the value of Rs. 720,000/- which goes a long way to meet part of the expenses.

Realizing the good work of the Lions, the Social Services Department handed over another 7 ½ acres of land to the Camilla Trust for development purposes.

Visitors to the School have commended the high standards that have been maintained at all times. The School needs the continuous support and patronage of every single Lion, Lions Lady, Leo and the public for its existence.

Getting involved and fulfilling the needs of Camilla School is a Golden opportunity to members of the Lions family to translate their philosophy of “ WE SERVE" in to reality. To all human beings it gives an opportunity for CARING, SHARING and LOVING.

Planned Development Work

           (1)   Construction of Chalets

In keeping with new methods of dealing with the handicapped the Trust intends constructing 15 chalets to have 3 inmates and a mother in each of the chalets. A model chalet has been constructed. The concept would provide the inmates a homely environment more conductive for their rehabilitation.

Each chalet will cost Rs. 450,000/-

(2)   Gymnasium

The wooden floor of the gymnasium has given way. It needs complete relaying. The gymnasium also needs few of the modern euipment that could rehabilitate the physically handicapped. It is estimated that the relaying of the wooden floor and providing exercise equipment would cost Rs. 250,000/-

      (3)   Vocational Training Centre

Some of the Children have to be kept occupied to create an atmosphere for rehabilitation. Simple assignments such as coir rope making, making of floor rugs, envelopes are in our plans. The school needs a fairly simple building for this purpose. Cost of such a building has been estimated at Rs. 550,000/-

       (4)   Separate Home for the Disabled Elders

Although the primary object of the school is to rehabilitate the inmates, it is found that more than 50 % of the inmates cannot be rehabilitated. Parents cannot afford to take them to their own homes. These children are over 20 years of age. It is proposed to separate the grown up children and house them in a separate building. The school is looking forward to benefactors who could construct such a building.

      (5)   Mini Hospital

It is proposed to construct a Mini Hospital fully euipped to treat disabled children both Mental & Physical. The facilities will be available not only to the inmates of the Camilla School but also for all other disabled children as well.

      (6)   Play Ground

Children need a pleasant environment and recreation. Therefore a well-equipped and protected playground is essential and will be constructed shortly.
